A big thank you for coming to conferences. I had 100% attendance. It was so nice to visit with you about your special kindergartner! I'm so lucky to have great families to work with this year. Our year is moving along quickly. It's hard to believe second quarter is here.
In literacy, we continue to focus on one letter a week. We listen for that sound at the beginning and ending of words and sometimes in the middle. We are blending sounds to make words and segmenting words as we write the sounds we hear. We read books during guided reading and practice spelling our kindergarten words. During Writer's workshop, we continue to write stories from our lives in our journals. We use "turtle talk" to help us stretch out the sounds in unknown words.
In math, we are beginning to focus on the teen numbers. We count the numbers using a ten group - 11 is 10 and 1, 12 is 10 and 2, etc. We continue to practice writing numbers to 100 and I have several more students who wrote to 100 this month. Many are writing to 50. It's fun watching their excitement when they make this goal!
We continue to work on being independent workers. I have many social butterflies in my class. We have been working very hard to use whisper voices and to stay in our spots when we are working. We have also been working on being okay when someone else is not okay. Please reinforce these goals to help your kindergartner be successful.

What a busy month! Your child knows our routines, has been the helper, and enjoys being with friends! We continue to work on following our class rules and are learning to work independently. I am blessed to work with such enthusiastic kindergartners!
In literacy, we continue to say the alphabet chant daily and have started guided reading groups. During this time (Daily 5), students work in small groups while one group meets with me. Some of the activities your child participates in are listening to a story in the listening area, reading to himself/herself, making letters with playdough, playing literacy games, and practicing writing letters and our kindergarten words.
During morning work, we practice writing our numbers. Our goal is 100 and I have two students who have already achieved this goal! We just took our first math test last week. We will continue to work with numbers to 10 and making designs with shapes. We will be talking about 5 groups and seeing the five groups in numbers 6 - 10.
Integrated studies themes have been seasons and symbols of America. Enjoy these wonderful fall days with your kindergartner!

Dear Families,
School is off to a great start. It has been a busy three weeks! We have been busy learning our school routines, making friends, saying the alphabet chant, and listening to lots of wonderful stories. It has been fun getting to know each kindergartner! It always amazes me how quickly they learn our routines.
In literacy, we have learned the alphabet chant and the actions for each letter. See if your kindergartner can say his/her favorite letters for you. We have looked for letters in our daily message, and talked about the letters in our names. We have worked on reading and recognizing the words I and can. In the next few weeks we will learn the, we, and see.
We have learned the quick practices in math and have been working with numbers to 10. Each kindergartner has the chance to lead the class through these routines. We have used our fingers as we count to 10 with our leader. We have worked with the trays, putting the numbers 1 through 10 in order and counting out shapes and making designs and patterns with specific numbers.
In integrated studies, we have been talking about school rules and safety. I look forward to watching my kindergartners grow in confidence and knowledge as the year goes by. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
